Edwardian Dressing Table Pot w/ Silver Lid, 1902
This is an elegant Edwardian Cut Glass Dressing Table Pot with a Sterling Silver lid. The pot has hobnail cut decoration all around the body and a star cut base. The silver lid has embossed flowers and scrolls surrounding a scalloped circular blank cartouche and is gilded on the underside.
The pot is made in Birmingham by C.C. May & Sons and dates to 1902. Charles May founded his company in Hackney in London in 1838, becoming C.C. May & Sons around 1880. The firm specialised in two particular areas: thimbles and silver mounted glassware and remained in business up until the early 1920s.
Condition is very good with no chips or cracks in the cut glass pot and just some tiny dings in the silver lid plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after 120 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The pot stands 5.2cm / 2ins high and is 4.3cm / 1.7ins in diameter. The silver lid by itself weighs 7.9g / 0.28oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together the pot weighs in at 74.8g / 2.6oz.
The hallmarks on the side of the lid are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter c for 1902 and the CM makers' mark for C.C. May & Sons.
