Edwardian Silver & MOP Butter Knife, Sheff, 1902

This is a very attractive Edwardian Sterling Silver Butter Knife with a Mother of Pearl handle. The knife has the classic scimitar shaped blade which is beautifully engraved with flowers and foliage on the upper side. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The butter knife was made in Sheffield by the firm of Isaac Ellis & Sons and dates to 1902. Isaac Ellis was a cutler and silversmith who took over his father Ebenezer’s business after his death in 1832. He quickly established a good reputation and received an Honourable Mention at the Great Exhibition in 1851. After Isaac’s death the firm continued under his two sons before ownership passed to Charles Ward and Robert Wharam who retained the Isaac Ellis name. The firm finally ceased trading in the 1930s.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents, no damage to the Mother of Pearl and just the minimal superficial surface wear that has to be expected after 120 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The butter knife is 14.5cm / 5.7ins long and weighs in at 26.1g / 0.92oz.
Both the blade and the ferrule are fully hallmarked and the marks are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter k for 1902 and the I.E & S makers' mark for Isaac Ellis & Sons.
Shipping in the UK is £4.50 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase. Also, please be aware that some countries have restrictions on the import of Mother of Pearl so please check that you are allowed to bring it into your country.
