Edwardian Silver Coronation Spoon, Elkington, 1901

This is a fine quality Edwardian Sterling Silver Coronation Spoon replica. Used most recently at the coronation of King Charles III, the anointing spoon is the oldest item in the coronation regalia, dating back to the l2th century, and forms part of the Crown Jewels on display in the Tower of London. Replicas were made as memorabilia for all the 20th century coronations in 1902, 1911, 1937 and 1953.
The coronation spoon was made in Birmingham by world famous silversmiths Elkington & Co and dates to 1901, ready for the coronation of Edward VII in 1902. Elkington & Co are one of the great names of English silverware. Founded by George Elkington in 1836, they took out the world's first silver electroplating patent in 1838 and this is what they are best known for. However they always continued to produce very high quality Sterling Silver alongside their silver plate. The company was merged into British Silverware with Walker & Hall and Mappin & Webb in 1963.
The spoon was originally gilded all over but many years of polishing and cleaning have rubbed away some of the gold plating. Other than this condition is very good, with no dings or dents. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The spoon is 17.6cm / 6.9ins long, about 2/3rd size of the original, and weighs in at a very respectable 45.4g / 1.6oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the bowl, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter b for 1901 and the E & Co. Ld. makers' mark for Elkington & Co Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £5 by Royal Mail Tracked 24.
