Edwardian Silver Vesta Case, Chester, 1902
This is a smart Edwardian Sterling Silver Vesta Case. The case is rectangular with scroll engraving to front and back and a triangular blank cartouche on the front. There is a ring on the side for attaching it to a watch chain or chatelaine.
The vesta case was made by noted silversmiths Robert Pringle & Sons and assayed in Chester in 1902. Robert Pringle started his business in London's Clerkenwell Road around 1870, with his sons joining the business in the mid-1880s. The company manufactured in London, Sheffield and Birmingham. They remained a family run firm until finally closing in the late 1950s. They made a wide range of silverware for domestic and personal use but are best known for their consistently good quality tableware and flatware.
Condition is good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 120 years of use. The hinge is in good working order and the lid snaps shut securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The vesta case is 4.1cm / 1.6ins by 3.1cm / 1.2ins and weighs in at a respectable 18.8g / 0.66oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside rim, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter B for 1902 and the R.P assay mark for Robert Pringle & Sons.
