George III Silver Military Snuff Box, W Pugh, 1810

Here we have an interesting George III Sterling Silver Snuff Box with a Gilt Interior. The box is oblong with engraved decoration to top and bottom and is curved on one side to fit comfortably into a pocket. The engraved design has a military theme and features a drum, a sword, a cannon and two flags. This was made at the height of the Napoleonic Wars and it's easy to picture an officer carrying this with him on campaign in Wellington's army.
The snuff box was made in Birmingham by silversmith William Pugh and dates to 1810. William Pugh was active in Birmingham between around 1800 and around 1820 and is probably best known for his very fine caddy spoons although he also made some excellent vinaigrettes and snuff boxes such as this one.
Condition is very good, with just a couple of tiny dings in the body and the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 215 years of good service. The hinge is in good working order and the lid shuts smoothly. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The snuff box measures 4.5cm / 1.8ins by 2.7cm / 1.1ins and is 0.9cm n/ 0.35ins deep. It weighs in at a respectable 20.1g / 0.71oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside of the box, are split between the lid and the base as is usually the case with snuff boxes. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter m for 1810, the George III duty mark and the W P makers' mark for William Pugh.
Shipping in the UK is £12.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the snuff box.
