George III Silver Punch Ladle, London, 1780

Here we have an elegant George III Sterling Silver Punch Ladle with a Turned Wood Handle. The silver bowl is oval shaped with a broad pouring lip on one side. The wooden handle is expertly hand turned with three knops and a cone shaped finial. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The punch ladle was made in London by Ann Smith and Nathaniel Appleton and dates to 1780. The partnership of Ann Smith and Nathaniel Appleton registered their mark at London’s Goldsmith’s Hall in 1771. They principally produced silverware for the table and remained in business into at least the mid 1780s.
Condition is very good with just a small ding where the silver collar joins the wooden handle plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 240 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The punch ladle is 34.7cm / 13.7ins long and 8.2cm / 3.2ins across the bowl. It weighs in at 48.5g / 1.7oz.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the lip, are nice and clear to read with just some rubbing to the makers' mark. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter e for 1780 and the makers' mark which is A S horizontally across and N A vertically down for Ann Smith and Nathaniel Appleton.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the ladle.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
