George III Silver Sauce Ladle, Smith & Fearn, 1790
Here we have a good quality George III Sterling Silver Sauce Ladle in the Old English Thread pattern. The ladle has the initials JM elegantly engraved in late eighteenth century style at the top of the stem.
The sauce ladle is made in London by the partnership of George Smith & William Fearn and dates to 1790. Specialist spoon makers George Smith & William Fearn were both part of an interlinked group of families that also included the Eleys and the Chawners and would ultimately emerge as Chawner & Co in the mid-19th century. Smith & Fearn's spoons and flatware are always of consistently good quality.
Condition is very good with just one truly tiny ding in the bowl and the superficial surface wear that you have to expect after 230 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The sauce ladle is 17.5cm / 6.9ins long and weighs a very respectable 51.3g / 1.8oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are crisp and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter p for 1790, the George III duty mark and the G.S over W.F makers' mark for George Smith & William Fearn.
