George III Silver Sifter Spoon, London, 1813
This is a fine quality George III Sterling Silver Sifter Spoon. The spoon is in the classic Old English pattern with a ladle style pierced bowl. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind. Originally intended for sugar it works equally well for sprinkling cocoa powder or cinnamon onto a cappucino!
The sifter spoon was made in London by the esteemed partnership of William Eley, William Fearn and William Chawner and dates to 1813. William Eley registered his first mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1778 and worked alone for nearly 20 years before forming a partnership with William Fearn in 1797. They were joined between 1808 and 1814 by William Chawner who then left to form Chawner & Co. William Eley died in 1824 and the family business was continued by his three sons.
Condition is extremely good with no dings, dents or damage and just the superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated after over 210 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The sifter is 12.5cm / 4.9ins long and 3.6cm / 1.4ins across the bowl. It weighs in at a very respectable 27.0g / 0.95oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the London date letter S for 1813, the George III duty mark and the WE, WF, WC makers' mark for William Eley, William Fearn & William Chawner.
