George III Silver Table Salt, William Stroud, 1795

This is an elegant George III Sterling Silver Table Salt with its original Blue Glass liner. The salt is oval with a pierced, galleried body and raised ends. It stands on four scroll feet. The cartouche is beautifully engraved with a set of initials which we think are PJAB but please see photograph to check.
The salt is made in London by silversmith William Stroud and dates to 1795. William Stroud registered his first mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1788 and remained in business until at least the late 1820s. He produced a range of domestic silverware which at that time would have been mostly made to order for individual customers.
Condition is good with no dings or dents but there are some patches of salt corrosion on the inside of the body. The blue glass liner, which has no chips or cracks, is a true Georgian one-off with a blister on one side, a star cut base and hand shaping around the star. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The salt is 8.5cm / 3.3ins long, 6cm / 2.3ins across and stands 5.2cm / 2ins high. Without the blue glass liner, it weighs 45.3g / 1.6oz of solid Sterling Silver and all in it weighs 135.5g / 4.8oz.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the body, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter u for 1795, the George III duty mark and the W S makers' mark for William Stroud.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the salt.
