George III Silver Table Spoon, Exeter, 1798

Here we have a fine quality George III Sterling Silver Table Spoon in the classic Old English pattern. The spoon is elegantly engraved at the top of the stem with P W to H W, so it was clearly gifted at some point, most probably as a Christening present.
The table spoon was made in Exeter by silversmith Joseph Hicks and dates to 1798. Joseph Hicks was a specialist spoon maker who was active in Exeter between around 1780 and 1835. Although his principal output was spoons and flatware his mark does occasionally show up on other items although these are very rare.
Condition is extremely good, with no wear to the tip and just the minimal superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 225 years. It seems likely that this has been kept as a treasured gift and heirloom and seen little or no use. Pleasse make sure to view all the photographs.
The table spoon is 22.2cm / 8.7ins long and weighs in at a very respectable 56.6g / 1.99oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the three towered wall assay mark for Exeter, the date letter B for 1798, the George III duty mark and the J H makers' mark for Joseph Hicks.
