George III Silver Table Spoon, London, 1784 Georgian Table Spoon %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
This is a very good quality George III Sterling Silver Table Spoon in the Old English Thread and Drop pattern. The spoon is made in a heavy gauge of silver by Richard Crossley in London and dates to 1784. Richard Crossley was a highly regarded specialist spoonmaker who worked from around 1780 up until his death in 1815.

The spoon is in the traditional Old English shape with a thread front and back and the drop on the underside of the finial. There is a short rat tail extending onto the back of the bowl. The front of the finial has a crest of a lion's paw.

The spoon has no dings or dents but there is surface scratching and some wear to the tip but this is only to be expected after over 235 years of use!

The table spoon is 21.2cm long and weighs a very substantial 79.8g of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are well struck and very clear to read. They are the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter "i" for 1784 and the RC makers' mark for Richard Crossley.
