George IV Silver & Gilt Mug, Craddock & Reid, 1821 George IV Georgian Silver Mug %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
Here we have a superb quality George IV Sterling Silver Mug with a Gilt interior. The bulbous mug has an embossed floral design around the lower part surrounding a blank cartouche. The top and bottom rims have a beaded pattern and the handle has a floral design. This would be ideal as a gift for a Christening, a New Baby, a silver anniversary, a retirement or any special occasion.

The mug was made in London by Joseph Craddock and William Ker Reid and dates to 1821, the first full year of George IV's reign. Joseph Craddock was a partner in the established firm of Thomas and Joseph Guest whilst William Ker Reid was a member of the renowned Newcastle Ker Reid family of silversmiths. Joseph & William formed their partnership in London in 1812, taking over the Guest family business. They were together until 1825 when they split the partnership and established separate firms in their own names.

Condition is remarkably good with no dings or dents, no significant loss to the gilding on the interior and just the minimal superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 200 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The mug is 9.4cm / 3.7ins at its widest from the front of the mug to the back of the handle, 7cm / 2.7ins in diameter and stands 8.4cm / 3.3ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 134.4g / 4.74oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the upper part of the body, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter f for 1821, the George III duty mark (the George IV mark would be introduced later in the year) and the I C over W R makers' mark for Joseph Craddock and William Ker Reid.

Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the mug.
