George IV Silver Sauce Ladle, Charles Eley, 1828

This is a fine quality George IV Sterling Silver Sauce Ladle in the ever-popular King's Pattern. The ladle is double struck (ie it has the pattern on both sides) and is made in a good heavy gauge of silver. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The sauce ladle is made in London by silversmith Charles Eley and dates to 1828. The Eley family were very important flatware makers in the late 18th and early 19th century. They were closely associated with the Fearn and Chawner families of silversmiths. Charles Eley was the middle son of William Eley Snr and was initially apprenticed to his father, as were his two brothers. After William Snr died in 1824, the three brothers took over the business but within a year they had each set up by themselves in adjacent premises in Paternoster Row near St Paul's Cathedral. Charles' mark is much less frequently seen than that of his older brother William Jnr.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 195 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The sauce ladle is 17.5cm / 6.9ins long and 5.9cm / 2.3ins across the bowl. It weighs in at a substantial 85.9g / 3oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter n for 1828, the George IV duty mark and the C E makers' mark for Charles Eley.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the sauce ladle.
