George IV Silver Table Spoon, F. Higgins, 1824
Here we have a top quality George IV Sterling Silver Table Spoon in the classic Fiddle pattern. The spoon has the initials "JW" elegantly engraved in script style at the top of the stem.
The spoon is very well made in a heavy gauge of silver by Francis Higgins in London and dates to 1824. Francis Higgins, usually designated (II) to separate him from his father and son of the same name, was a specialist silver spoon maker who lived and worked at premises in Kirby Street in London's prestigious Hatton Garden area. Active from around 1813 to about 1870, when his son took over the business, his spoons are always of the very best quality and well worth looking out for.
Condition is very good with no no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear you have to expect after nearly 200 years of use! Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The table spoon is 21cm / 8.25" long and weighs in at a substantial 62.9g / 2.22oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter "i" for 1824, the George IV duty mark and the F.H makers' mark for Francis Higgins (II).
