George IV Silver Teaspoon, Johnathan Hayne, 1821

This is a good quality George IV Sterling Silver Teaspoon in the traditional Fiddle pattern. The spoon has two sets of initials engraved at the top of the stem. W J H is engraved in 18th century style above the letter B engraved in 19th century script style, suggesting the spoon was perhaps inherited at some point.
The teaspoon was made in London by silversmith Jonathan Hayne and dates to 1821, the first full year of George IV's reign. The firm traced its origin back to a business started by Thomas Wallis in around 1758. His son, Thomas Jnr, formed a partnership with Jonathan Hayne in 1810 and Hayne eventually took sole control of the firm in 1821. He was succeeded by his son Samuel Hayne who took Dudley Cater as his partner in 1836. They finally ceased trading in 1865.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 200 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The teaspoon is 13.1cm / 5.1ins long and weighs in at a respectable 17.5g / 0.62oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter f for 1821, the George III duty mark (the George IV mark came into use later that year) and the script style J H makers' mark for Jonathan Hayne.
