George V Pierced Silver Bonbon Dish, 1913

This is a very elegant and eye-catching George V Sterling Silver Bonbon Dish. It is made in Birmingham by the firm of A & J Zimmerman Ltd and dates to just before the First World War in 1913. Arthur & John Zimmerman founded their company in Regent Place, Birmingham in 1889 and remained in business until 1929, probably a victim, like so many others that year, of the Wall Street Crash.
This is a very distinctive piece with a stepped base, a pedestal stem and a smooth bowl rising to sides pierced with ovals of increasing size. Without being overtly Art Nouveau, it has the organic feel that is typical of pieces of the era. It would look great filled with strawberries, with colourful sweets or luxurious champagne truffles for special occasions.
Condition is extremely good with no dings or dents, no splits in the pierced sides and only the superficial surface wear that is to be expected after over 100 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The dish is 13cm / 5.1" in diameter across the top and stands 8.9cm / 3.5" high. It weighs a substantial 118.7g / 4.19oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the inside of the bowl are well struck and clear to read with the makers' mark being just a little rubbed. They are the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter "o" for 1913 and the distinctive A&J Z makers' mark for A & J Zimmerman. In addition there is a registered design number on the opposite side of the bowl to the hallmark which is 623744, dating the design also to 1913.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery parcel post, which includes cover for the value of the dish.
