George V Silver & Enamel Letter Opener, B'ham 1923
Here we have a good quality George V Letter Opener with a Steel blade and a Sterling Silver & Enamel handle. The guilloche enamel handled is coloured pale blue and has an oval design at the top which may be a representation of the all-seeing eye, often associated with freemasonry but also featuring on the Great Seal of the United States of America.
The letter opener is made in Birmingham by silversmith Henry Clifford Davis and dates to 1923. Founded by Henry Davis in 1901, the firm produced a wide range of silverware for domestic, office and personal use. They remained in business until at least the mid-1960s.
Condition is extremely good, with just one tiny ding in the silver of the handle and no damage to the enamel, just the overall superficial surface wear that has to be expected after nearly 100 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The letter opener is 21.7cm / 8.5ins long and weighs in at 38g / 1.3oz of mixed silver, steel and enamel. It is a well made and very elegant item.
The hallmarks, on the side of the handle, are clear to read with just some rubbing to the makers' mark. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter y for 1923 and the H.C.D makers' mark for Henry Clifford Davis.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the letter opener.
