George V Silver Import Spoon, L. Neresheimer, 1923

This is an ornate imported George V Sterling Silver Decorative Spoon. The spoon has a rural scene embossed in the bowl. Above this the stem starts with a head above crossed torches surmounted by a figure. The next section has climbing foliage on a textured background and then the finial is the coat of arms of the City of Amsterdam in The Netherlands.
Although its appearance is very much in the Dutch style, this spoon was actually made in Hanau in Germany by Ludwig Neresheimer & Co and then imported into London by Berthold Hermann Muller in 1923. Hanau had a long history as a Free Trade City and insisted on marking silver according to its own requirements and not in compliance with German law. The Neresheimer firm, founded in 1890, was one of the most successful of the Hanau silversmiths. They had a close relationship with Berthold Muller who specialised in importing continental silver for his store in London's Wardour Street in Soho.
Condition is extremely good and this spoon has clearly been kept for its decorative value and not for culinary or serving use for the last 100 years. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The spoon is 19cm / 7.5ins long and weighs in at a very respectable 46.3g / 1.6oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The import hallmarks in the bowl are crisp and clear to read. They show the 925 stamp for Sterling Silver, the astrological sign for Leo, which is the London assay import mark, the date letter h for 1923 and the B.H.M importers' mark for Berthold Hermann Muller. On the back of the stem are the Hanau marks, which are a little rubbed from polishing. They show the N in a shield, the pineapple and the lion rampant, all marks of Ludwig Neresheimer & Co alongside the B.H.M mark for Berthold Hermann Muller, which indicates that this was made to order for his London store.
