George V Silver Inkwell, A & J Zimmerman, 1924

Here we have a fine quality George V Sterling Silver Inkwell with its original Clear Glass liner. The inkwell is oval in shape with notches for resting a pen on either side of the central well. The base is weighted for stability and lined with thin black leather to avoid scratching the surface of your desk. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The inkwell was made in Birmingham by highly regarded silversmiths A & J Zimmerman and dates to 1924. The firm was founded by brothers Arthur & John Zimmerman in Birmingham in 1879, operating from premises at Regent Place in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. They later opened a second premises and a showroom in London. They produced a wide range of silverware of consistently good quality up until they ceased trading around 1930.
The inkwell has definitely seen some use but overall condition is good. There are two dings on the rim of the lid, which doesn't sit quite flat. The glass liner has a small chip in the underside of the rim on one side but remains perfectly functional. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The inkwell base measures 13.8cm / 5.4ins by 8.1cm / 3.2ins and it stands 5.2cm / 2ins high with the lid closed. It weighs in at 403.7g / 14.2oz but this does of course include the weighting material in the base.
The hallmarks, at the back of the base, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. THey show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter z for 1924 and the distinctive A & J Z makers' mark for A & J Zimmerman. It also has the registered design number 618651, which dates the original design to 1913.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the inkwell.
