George V Silver Jewellery Box, Elkington & Co 1912

Here we have an elegant George V Sterling Silver Jewellery Box. The box is of a serpentine oblong shape and stands on four cabriolet legs. The lid has floral motifs on each side and is gilded on the interior. The base is lined in pale green velvet.
The box was made in Birmingham by world famous silversmiths Elkington & Co and dates to 1912. Elkington & Co are one of the great names of English silverware. Founded by George Elkington in 1836, they took out the world's first silver electroplating patent in 1838 and this is what they are best known for. However they always continued to produce very high quality Sterling Silver alongside their silver plate. The company was merged into British Silverware with Walker & Hall and Mappin & Webb in 1963.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 110 years of use. The hinge is in good working order and the lid shuts smoothly. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The antique jewellery box measures 8.8cm / 3.5ins by 5.3cm / 2ins and it stands 3.8cm / 1.5ins high. It weighs 183.3g / 6.46oz.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the base, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham the date letter n for 1912 and the distinctive E & Co makers' mark for Elkington & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £12.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the box.
