George V Silver Jewellery Box, W.J. Myatt, 1914

Here we have an attractive George V Sterling Silver Jewellery Box. The box is oblong with chamfered corners and stands on four cabriolet legs. The top of the lid has engine turned decoration around a blank circular cartouche, the inside of the lid is gilded and the interior of the box is lined in dark red velvet.
The jewellery box was made in Birmingham by W.J. Myatt & Co and dates to 1914. The firm was founded in Birmingham by William James Myatt in 1895, initially as electroplaters. They became W.J. Myatt & Co in 1899 and registered a silver mark at the Birmingham assay office and went on to open a showroom in London’s Hatton Garden. After WW2 they ceased producing Sterling Silver but continued to produce electroplate and pewter.
Condition is very good, with just a couple of truly tiny dings plus the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 110 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The box is 8cm / 3.1ins by 6cm / 2.3ins and stands 4.8cm / 1.9ins high. Without the interior fittings it weighs in at 70.2g / 2.47oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together it weighs 114.6g / 4oz.
The hallmarks, on the inside rim of the box, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter p for 1914 and the W J M & Co makers' mark for W.J. Myatt & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £12 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the jewellery box.
