George VI Silver 3 Pce Condiment Set, 1938/9
This is a stylish George VI Sterling Silver 3 Piece Condiment Set with its original Blue Glass Liners from the late 1930s. The set consists of a drum style mustard pot and its original mustard spoon with a gilded bowl alongside cylindrical salt and pepper shakers with domed lids.
The three piece set was made in Birmingham by Barker Brothers Silverware and dates to 1938, with the spoon dated 1939. Founded in 1801 by Mary Barker, the firm became Barker Brothers in 1886 when Mary's grandsons were in control. They were very successful silversmiths and electroplaters and remained in business up until 1992.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents in the silver items and just a small chip in the rim of the glass liner on the mustard pot, which remains perfectly usable. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The mustard pot is 5.6cm / 2.2ins from rim to handle, 4cm / 1.6cm in diameter and 4cm / 1.6cm high, with the mustard spoon being 6.3cm / 2.5ins long. The salt and pepper shakers are both 5.2cm / 2ins high and 2.6cm / 1in in diameter. Without the glass liners the set weighs in at 38.9g / 1.37oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together the set weighs 109.2g / 3.85oz.
The hallmarks, on the undersides of the bases and the underside of the bowl of the spoon are all nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter O for 1938 or P for 1939 and the B.B S Ld makers' mark for Barker Brothers Silverware Ltd.
