Molly Challoner of Newcastle Silver Jug & Bowl c1930

We have for sale an extremely rare piece of Newcastle Women's history - a finely planished Arts and Crafts silver milk jug and sugar bowl by the excellent Newcastle silversmith Susannah Mary (Molly) Challoner.
This lovely jug and bowl set consists beautifully planished, simple tapered ovoid bowl shaped bodies, which in the case of the bowl extends to two angular handles and in the case of the milk extends to a single angular handle and a generous spout. Both the jug and bowl carry full English hallmarks for London 1930, along with the makers marks SMC for Susannah Mary (Molly) Challoner. Molly Challoner was active as a silversmith in Newcastle where she worked at her family home, 15 Framlington Place, between 1927 and 1955. She was a very skilled silversmith who created stunning pieces of arts and crafts planished and enameled silverware including, spoons bowls, boxes, jugs and vases. She exhibited her work at the Arts and Crafts Society Exhibitions of 1926 and 1928 and her work was also exhibited at the 1994 Brighton University exhibition “Women Designing: Redefining Design in Britain Between the Wars”. Her work is extremely hard to find.
The jug and bowl are both in a very good antique condition, the Hallmarks and makers marks are in a very good barely rubbed condition. The jug is 4.5 inches long (11.5cm), whilst the bowl is 4.7 inches (12cm) long, both the jug and bowl are just about two inches (5cm) high. Together the jug and bowl weigh a total of 152g.
