Here we have a good quality pair of George V Cut Glass Salts with Sterling Silver rims from the First World War period. The round glass salts have faceted sides and star cut bases and are surmounted by a rim in hallmarked Sterling Silver.

The salts are made by C.C. May & Sons in London and date to 1915, just one year into the First World War. Charles May founded his firm of silversmiths in the late 1830s. In 1881 they became C.C. May & Sons. They specialised in silver mounted glass items such as perfume bottles, small vases and these salts. They are also well known for their silver thimbles. The firm ceased trading in the 1920s.

The glass on both salts is in very good condition with no chips, cracks or other damage. The silver rim of one of the salts has a couple of small dings in it, which is very common on these items but the other is in good shape. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The salts are 6cm / 2.4" in diameter at their widest point and stand 3.5cm / 1.4" high. The pair together weigh 174.3g / 6.15oz.

The hallmarks on the silver rims are a little rubbed but still easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter "u" for 1915 and the C.M makers' mark for C.C. May & Sons.
