Here we have a very fine cased set of Four Victorian Sterling Silver Shell Salts and Spoons with Gilt interiors and bowls. Each shell salt has a scrolled end acting as a handle and stands on three ball feet. The salt spoons have arched stems, ball finials and shell bowls. They are presented in their original fitted case with a blue velvet tray and blue satin lining in the lid.

The salts and spoons were made in Birmingham by silversmith William Henry Leather and date to 1893. William Henry Leather established his firm in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter in the early 1890s and registered marks at the Birmingham and Chester assay offices. The company made a broad range of silverware from small brooches up to full size teapots but are probably best known for their tableware and flatware. They ceased trading around 1930.

Condition is very good with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 130 years of use. The outside of the box is a little scuffed but the clasp and hinges are in working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each salt is 5cm / 1.9ins by 4.5cm / 1.8ins and each spoon is 5.6cm / 2.2ins long. The set altogether, unboxed, weighs in at 51.1g / 1.8oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the undersides of the salts, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter t for 1893 and the W.H.L makers' mark for William Henry Leather.
