Silver & Wood Mazer Bowl, by D & M Davies, 1929


A lovely Arts and Crafts sterling silver & wood mazer bowl with excellent Celtic casting and engraving on an otherwise plain round bowl mounted on a cylindrical oak base. It was made by David and Maurice Davis of Birmingham, at Livery Street, in 1929. The assay mark is for Sheffield. A mazer is a bowl without handles used for drinking in medieval times, from around 13th to 16th century and as early as 1280.
Diameter: 12 cm | Height: 6.7 cm | Weight: 210 g (including the wood base).
The silver is in very good condition with minor surface wear, commensurate with age. Hallmarks are crisp and clear. Wood in excellent antique condition, with no splits.
