Victorian Silver 1 Pint Tankard, Exeter, 1877

Here we have an elegant Victorian Sterling Silver One Pint Tankard with a Gilt Interior. The tankard has a circular rim foot, a plain c-shape handle and a tapering body. The body is engraved on the front with a scrolling acanthus leaf design surrounding a blank cartouche.
The tankard was made by renowned silversmiths Josiah Williams & Co and assayed in Exeter in 1877. Josiah Williams & Co of Bristol were a hugely successful firm of silversmiths, the biggest in England outside of London, Birmingham and Sheffield. They traced their history back to Robert Williams succeeding to the business of William Woodman in around 1838. The firm passed through several generations of the Williams family becoming Josiah Williams & Co in the 1870s. Later partners included George Jackson and David Fullerton before they became a limited company in 1925. They finally ceased trading around 1940.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents, no significant wear to the gilding and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 145 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The tankard stands 13cm / 5.1ins high and is 7.8cm / 3.1ins in diameter. It weighs in at a very substantial 273.7g / 9.65oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the upper part of the body near the handle, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the three towered wall assay mark for Exeter, the date letter A for 1877, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the J.W & Co makers' mark for Josiah Williams & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £11.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the tankard.
