Victorian Silver & Agate Butter Knife, G.U, 1840

This is a distinguished looking early Victorian Sterling Silver and Agate Butter Knife. The knife has a Sterling Silver scimitar shaped blade and a silver mounted brown agate handle. The ferrule or collar is decorated with flowers and has leaves extending out to either side.
The butter knife was made in Birmingham by the celebrated silversmiths George Unite and dates to 1840. George Unite & James Hilliard founded the firm in 1825 as Unite & Hilliard. After Hilliard withdrew in the 1830s, George continued by himself before the firm became George Unite & Sons in 1865. The business remained under the management of the Unite family until 1897 when it was taken over by William Lyde who retained the name up until the late 1920s.
Condition is good with just a few tiny dings in the silver band around the lower part of the agate handle plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 180 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The butter knife is 20.5cm / 8.1ins long and weighs in at 61g / 2.1oz of combined Sterling Silver and agate.
The hallmarks on the blade of the knife are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the Gothic date letter R for 1840, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the G.U makers' mark for George Unite.
Shipping in the UK is £6.50 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
