Victorian Silver & MOP Muffin Fork, R Pringle 1895

This is an attractive Victorian Sterling Silver Muffin Fork with a Mother of Pearl Handle. The fork has a silver ferrule or collar at the top of the mother of pearl handle, a barley twist shaft and a trident style head which is engraved on both sides with ivy leaves, a symbol of loyalty and fidelity. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
English muffins are traditionally torn open with a fork rather than cut with a knife as the resulting rough texture gives a lovely crisp top when toasted.
The muffin fork was made in Birmingham by Robert Pringle & Sons and dates to 1895. Robert Pringle started his business in London's Clerkenwell Road around 1870, with his sons joining the business in the mid-1880s. The company manufactured in London, Sheffield and Birmingham. They remained a family run firm until finally closing in the late 1950s. They made a wide range of silverware for domestic and personal use but are best known for their consistently good quality tableware and flatware.
Condition is extremely good, with no damage to the mother of pearl, no dings or dents in the silver and just the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 125 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The muffin fork is 15.2cm / 6ins long and weighs 17.7g / 0.62oz.
The hallmarks, on the head of the fork, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the Gothic date letter v for 1895 and the R.P makers' mark for Robert Pringle & Sons.
Shipping in the UK is £5 by Royal Mail Tracked 24.
