Victorian Silver Bachelor 3 Pce Tea Set, 1899

Here we have a distinctively Victorian Sterling Silver 3 Piece Bachelor Tea Set. The set consists of a teapot, a cream jug and a sugar bowl. All of them have a shield shaped blank cartouche on each side surrounded by elaborate scrollwork and flowers. The handle and finial of the teapot are ebonised wood.
The tea set is made by Nathan & Hayes and assayed in Chester in 1899. George Nathan & Ridley Hayes founded their business in Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter in the early 1890s. Quickly successful they opened a showroom in London's Hatton Garden district and their makers' mark is found in Birmingham, London and Chester. They went out of business during the First World War.
Condition is generally good with just a few small dings in the body of the teapot and the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 120 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The teapot is 22.1cm / 8.7ins from spout to handle, 9.1cm / 3.6ins across and 12.5cm / 4.9ins high to the top of the handle. The cream jug is 12.3cm / 4.8ins from lip to handle, 5.4cm / 2.1ins across and 7.2cm / 2.8ins high. The sugar bowl is 15.1cm / 5.9ins from handle to handle, 5.9cm / 2.3ins across and 7.2cm / 2.8ins high. The set of three together weighs in at a very substantial 430g / 15.1oz, although this does of course include the handle & finial on the teapot.
The hallmarks on each piece are on the bodies close to the handles. The ones on the teapot are a little rubbed but the others are clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword & three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter Q for 1899 and the G.N over R.H makers' mark for George Nathan and Ridley Hayes.
Shipping in the UK is £12 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the tea set.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
