Victorian Silver Belt Buckle, William Hutton, 1895
This is an ornate large late Victorian Sterling Silver Belt Buckle. The cast buckle has an elaborate pierced design of scrolls and flowers with musical cherubs at the top and bottom and female faces on the left and right sides.
The buckle was made in London by highly regarded silversmiths William Hutton & Sons and dates to 1895. William Hutton established the firm in Birmingham in 1800 but in 1832 he transferred the entire business to Sheffield. Several generations of the Hutton family followed in the business and additional manufacturing was set up in London and back in Birmingham as well as a showroom in London’s Holborn district. The firm got into difficulty in the late 1920s, as so many did, and was taken over by James Dixon & Sons in 1930.
Condition is very good, with no dings, dents or damage and just the superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated after 130 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The buckle is of a substantial size, measuring 9.9cm / 3.9ins high by 5cm / 1.9ins wide. It weighs in at a very respectable 77.8g / 2.74oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on one corner of the buckle, are nice and clear to read with just a little distortion to the makers' mark. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter U for 1895 and the distinctive W H & Ss Ltd makers' mark for William Hutton & Sons Ltd.
