Victorian Silver Cream Jug & Sugar Bowl, 1899

This superb late Victorian Sterling Silver Cream Jug and Sugar Bowl set features beautiful repousse decoration of flowers and swirls with blank cartouches on both sides of each piece. The set is made by Josiah Williams & Co in Bristol and assayed in London in 1899.
Josiah Williams & Co were a hugely successful silversmiths founded in Bristol in the early 1800s. They were the largest silversmiths outside of London, Birmingham & Sheffield. They produced consistently high quality pieces most notably in flatware and tableware. By the early 1880s the controlling partners were George Jackson and David Fullerton. They ceased trading in 1940.
This cream jug and sugar bowl set is distinctly Victorian with their extensive decoration married to very high quality and a good gauge of silver. Condition of both pieces is extremely good with no dings or dents and just some very superficial scuffing to the bases, which is only to be expected after 120 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The set would look stunning on a dining table or coffee table today and would be the perfect accessory for a cream tea or fresh strawberries.
The cream jug is 6cm in diameter and 4.5cm high. The sugar bowl is 8cm in diameter by 5cm high. The pair together weigh a substantial 117.7g of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the bases of each piece are well struck and clear to read. They are a little crisper on the base of the sugar bowl as against the jug. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter "d" for 1899 and the GJ over DF makers' mark for George Jackson and David Fullerton of Josiah Williams & Co.
