Victorian Silver Dish, Martin, Hall & Co, 1895

This is a beautiful late Victorian Sterling Silver Pierced Dish. The dish has a very slightly domed circular base, low pierced sides and a broad rim with embossed scrolls and flowers and further pierced decoration.
This is a versatile item that could be used for sweets or snacks, as a stand for a small pillar candle, as a trinket dish for a dressing table, as a holder for potpourri or whatever you may choose.
The dish was made in London by silversmiths Martin, Hall & Co and dates to 1895. The firm was founded by Richard Martin and brothers Ebenezer & Joshua Hall in 1854 as the successor to Roberts & Hall, in which Ebenezer had been a partner. The company manufactured in Sheffield and had showrooms in London, Birmingham, Glasgow and Sydney, Australia. They participated in many international exhibitions and won a number of awards. The firm went into decline with the economic downturn of the 1930s and had ceased trading by 1936.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, no damage to the pierced sections and just the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after 130 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The dish is 14.4cm / 5.6ins in diameter, stands 1.8cm / 0.71ins high and weighs in at a very respectable 86.9g / 3oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the upper side of the base, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter U for 1895 and the RM over EH makers' mark for Richard Martin and Ebenezer Hall of Martin, Hall & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £12.00 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the dish.
