Victorian Silver Napkin Ring, George Unite, 1880

This is an eye-catching Victorian Sterling Silver Napkin Ring. The circular ring is decorated in the Aesthetic style with engraved birds, flowers and foliage with a strong Japanese influence. The letter A is engraved in the cartouche at the front of the ring.
The napkin ring was made in Birmingham by renowned silversmiths George Unite & Sons and dates to 1880. George Unite & James Hilliard founded the firm in 1825 as Unite & Hilliard. After Hilliard withdrew in the 1830s, George continued by himself before the firm became George Unite & Sons in 1865. The business remained under the management of the Unite family until 1897 when it was taken over by William Lyde who retained the name up until the late 1920s.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the minimal superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 140 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The napkin ring is 4.8cm / 1.9ins in diameter and 2.9cm / 1.1ins deep. It weighs in at a respectable 25.7g / 0.91oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the outside of the ring, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter f for 1880, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the G U makers' mark for George Unite & Sons.
