Victorian Silver One Pint Tankard, Exeter, 1880

Here we have a superb Victorian Sterling Silver One Pint Tankard. The tankard is in the classic baluster shape with a circular spreading foot and beaded rims to top and bottom. The scroll handle is acanthus topped and the body is engraved all the way round with fern decoration in the Aesthetic style. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The tankard was made by renowned silversmiths Josiah Williams & Co and assayed in Exeter in 1880. Josiah Williams & Co of Bristol were a hugely successful firm of silversmiths, the biggest in England outside of London, Birmingham and Sheffield. They traced their history back to Robert Williams succeeding to the business of William Woodman in around 1838. The firm passed through several generations of the Williams family becoming Josiah Williams & Co in 1879. Later partners included George Jackson and David Fullerton before they became a limited company in 1925. They finally ceased trading around 1940.
Condition is extremely good with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 140 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The tankard is 13.5cm / 5.3ins from rim to handle, 9cm / 3.5ins across and 13.5cm / 5.3ins high. It weighs in at a very substantial 267.4g / 9.4oz of solid Sterling Silver. It comfortably holds a pint of beer with room for a foaming head if that is your preference!
The hallmarks, just below the rim, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the three towered wall assay mark for Exeter, the date letter D for 1880, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the partially polished away J.W & Co makers' mark for Josiah Williams & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the tankard.
