Victorian Silver Salt Spoon, H. Lias & Son, 1871

This is a good Victorian Sterling Silver Salt Spoon in the traditional Fiddle pattern. The spoon has a crest of an arm in armour holding an axe above the motto Caute Sed Strenue, Latin for Cautiously but Vigorously, which represents the Hamlyn family of Devon.
The salt spoon was made in London by well known silversmiths Henry Lias & Son and dates to 1871. The firm dated back to silversmith John Lias in 1791. He was joined by his two sons Henry & Charles and later Henry's son Henry Jnr joined the partnership. Henry Lias Snr served as Prime Warden, the highest position, in the Goldsmiths Company of London. In 1878 James Wakely joined Henry Lias Jnr and after Henry's retirement he was replaced by Frank Wheeler to form Wakely & Wheeler. They remained in business up until 1957.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the minimal superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 150 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The salt spoon is 9cm / 3.5ins long and weighs in at a respectable 12.3g / 0.43oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are a little rubbed but still easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the Gothic date letter q for 1871, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the H L over H L makers' mark for Henry Lias Snr & Jnr of Henry Lias & Son.
Shipping in the UK is £4 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For.
