Victorian Silver Salt Spoon, London, 1888

This is a top quality Victorian Sterling Silver Salt Spoon with a Gilt bowl. The spoon is in the traditional Fiddle pattern and has the letter H elegantly engraved at the top of the stem.
The salt spoon was made in London by the renowned silversmiths Holland, Aldwinckle & Slater and dates to 1888. The firm was founded in 1838 by Henry Holland and Thomas Frercks, who left the partnership in 1841. Henry Holland then continued by himself before being joined by his son, Henry Jnr in 1851. After Henry Snr’s retirement in 1883, John Aldwinckle and James Slater joined as partners to form Holland, Aldwinckle & Slater. The firm continued to be manged by various members of these three families until the firm was bought out by Francis Higgins in 1922.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents, no salt corrosion, no wear to the gilt in the bowl and only the barest minimum of superficial surface wear that you would expect after 135 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The salt spoon is 10.3cm / 4ins long and weighs in at a very respectable 15.1g / 0.53oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter N for 1888, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the JA over TS in a quatrefoil makers' mark for John Aldwinckle and Thomas Slater of Holland, Aldwinckle & Slater.
Shipping in the UK is £4.50 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For.
