2 Pairs Victorian Fruit Knives & Forks, 1899

Here we have 2 very attractive pairs of Victorian Sterling Silver Fruit Knives & Forks with Mother of Pearl handles. The pairs were made in Sheffield by maker WB, which is most likely to be William Briggs & Co although it is a slightly different mark to their usual one. The blades of the knives and the stems & tines of the forks are dated to 1899 but the silver ferrules or collars which join the mother of pearl handles to the blades and stems are dated to 1903. It is likely that the makers had built up a stock of silver knife blades and fork stems, which were then used over a period of time, the handles for these being added in 1903.
These are well made items with the mother of pearl handles perfectly complimenting the Sterling Silver blades and fork stems. They are perfectly usable today and work brilliantly with desserts such as poached pears. They also make good christening presents or retirement presents.
Whilst they have definitely been used, they remain in very good condition with no dings or dents to the silver and no cracks or damage to the mother of pearl. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The knives are 18.9cm / 7.4" long and the forks are 14.9cm / 5.8" long. All together they weigh 130.5g / 4.6oz but clearly this is not all silver.
The hallmarks on the blades of the knives, the stems of the forks and the ferrules of both are well struck and clear to read. The show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield and the WB makers' mark that is most likely to be for William Briggs & Co. The blades and stems have the date letter "g" for 1899 and the ferrules have the date letter "l" for 1903.
