2 x George V Silver Candlesticks, Wm. Hutton, 1917

Here we have a fine quality elegant pair of George V Sterling Silver Candlesticks. The candlesticks are octagonal with domed weighted bases for stability, knopped stems and removable sconces. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The candlesticks were made in Sheffield by renowned silversmiths William Hutton & Sons Ltd and date to 1917, towards the end of the First World War. William Hutton established the firm in Birmingham in 1800 but in 1832 he transferred the entire business to Sheffield. Several generations of the Hutton family followed in the business and additional manufacturing was set up in London and back in Birmingham as well as a showroom in London’s Holborn district. The firm got into trouble in the late 1920s, as so many did, and was taken over by James Dixon & Sons in 1930.
Condition is very good with just a small dent in the top rim of one candlestick which is not really seen when the sconce is in place plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 100 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each candlestick is 21.1cm / 8.3ins high and 10.9cm / 4.3ins across the base. The pair together weigh in at 1,174g / 41.4oz but this does of course include the weighting material in the bases.
The hallmarks, on the bases, are a little rubbed from many years of polishing but can still be read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the Gothic date letter z for 1917 and the distinctive W H & Ss Ld makers' mark for William Hutton & Sons Ltd. There is a partial secondary set on the side of each removable sconce showing the lion passant, the crown assay mark and the makers' mark.
Shipping in the UK is £12.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the candlesticks.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
