6 x Silver Handled Cake Forks, Sheffield, 1912

This is an elegant Cased Set of Six Sterling Silver Handled Cake or Pastry Forks. The Sterling Silver handles are stepped, in an early example of Deco style, which was just starting to appear about this time. The shafts and tines are silver plated.
The cake forks were made in Sheffield by Harrison Brothers & Howson and date to 1912. The firm was founded in 1847 when James & Henry Harrison and James Howson acquired the Sheffield silversmith business of Thomas Sansom & Sons. They quickly established themselves as high class cutlers, silversmiths and electroplaters and the company remained in the Harrison and Howson families until the business was bought out by Viner's Ltd in 1923, although the brand name was continued by Viner's for some years after that date. The box is for the retailer J.C. Vickery of Regent Street in London.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, a tiny amount of plate loss on two forks and the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 110 years of use. The outside of the box is somewhat scuffed but the blue satin and velvet interior is in nice condition. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each cake fork is 15.3cm / 6ins long and the set of six together, uncased, weigh in at 176g / 6.2oz. The boxed set weighs 498g / 17.6oz.
The hallmarks on the handles are a litte rubbed but can still be read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the Gothic date letter u for 1912 and the G H makers' mark for George Howson of Harrison Brothers & Howson.
