Art Deco Bowl & Spoon Set, Barker Brothers, 1935

This is an absolutely stunning Art Deco Sterling Silver Bowl & Spoon Set in its original box. The set is made by Barker Brothers in Birmingham with the bowl dating to 1935 and the spoon to 1934. It is a truly exceptional set of the very highest quality and in superb condition.
Barker Brothers have a history dating back to 1801 when Mary Barker established her silversmiths business in Birmingham. Brothers Herbert & Matthias Barker changed the name to Barker Brothers in 1885 and the firm remained in operation until their final closure in 1992.
This bowl and spoon set were almost certainly a presentation item, most probably a very luxurious christening gift. The pieces couldn't be more quintessentially Art Deco with the "Odeon" style decoration around the side of the bowl and on the finial of the spoon. There is no engraving or personalisation of any kind making this a perfect gift today or it would be a great addition to any collection of Art Deco silver.
Condition is excellent. There are no dings or dents and only the most superficial surface wear. It is unlikely it has ever been used in any serious way, perhaps just very rarely brought out for a special occasion. The box has some very minor scuffing on the outside and there are a few marks to the silk lining. The catch and hinges are in perfect working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The bowl is 12.1cm / 4.75" in diameter at the top, it is 16.3cm / 6.5" from handle to handle, 7.5cm / 3" in diameter across the base and 3.8cm / 2.25" high. The spoon is 14.1cm / 5.6" long. The set (unboxed) weighs a very substantial 250.6g / 8.84oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the side of the bowl and the underside of the bowl of the spoon are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the George V silver jubilee mark (used in 1934 & 1935) and the date letters "K" for 1934 on the spoon and "L" for 1935 on the bowl. In addition the spoon has a registered design number on the underside of the stem of 755872, which dates the design to 1930/31.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery which includes cover for the value of the set.
