Art Deco Silver Matchbox Holder, S.J. Rose, 1935
This is a stylish Art Deco Sterling Silver Matchbox Holder with engine turned decoration. It has a blank cartouche in the centre of the front.
The matchbox holder is made in London by S.J. Rose & Son and dates to 1935, the height of the Art Deco era. Stephen J. Rose founded his firm in London's Tottenham Court Road in the early 1920s and they remained in business up until around 1980. They are best known for their smoking related items.
Condition is very good with no dings, dents or damage and only the most minimal superficial surface wear. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The matchbox holder is 6cm / 2.4ins long by 3.8cm / 1.5ins wide by 2cm / 0.8ins deep. It weighs in at a very respectable 31.9g / 1.1oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, near the opening, are slightly rubbed but still easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the Gothic date letter u for 1935 and the S.J.R makers' mark for S.J. Rose & Son.
