Edwardian Silver Card Case, Chester, 1910

This is an elegant Edwardian Sterling Silver Card Case. The case is curved to fit comfortably into a pocket and is covered front back with engraved scroll decoration around a blank triangular cartouche on the front. The lid is hinged and the interior is gilded.
The card case was made by renowned silversmiths James Deakin & Sons and assayed in Chester in 1910. James Deakin founded the firm in 1866 and by 1878 and had been joined by his son William as partner, with two further sons joining in the 1880s. The company was very successful with manufacturing in Sheffield and showrooms in London, Glasgow and Belfast. In 1935 they were involved in an ill-fated merger which led to the company's collapse within a couple of years.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, no loss to the interior gilding and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 110 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The card case measures 8.2cm / 3.2ins by 4.2cm / 1.6ins and weighs in at a respectable 39.2g / 1.38oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside rim, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter K for 1910 and the J D over W D makers' mark for John & William Deakin of James Deakin & Sons.
