Edwardian Silver Card Case, Mappin & Webb, 1908

Here we have an elegant Edwardian Sterling Silver Card Case with a Gilt interior. The card case is oblong with a hinged lid and is decorated with engine turned stripes featuring chevron and wave patterns. There is a blank circular cartouche on the front.
The card case was made in Birmingham by world famous silversmiths Mappin & Webb and dates to 1908. One of the best known names in English silverware, the firm was originally founded in 1810 by Joseph Mappin Snr. In 1859 the company split into two parts which would become Mappin Brothers and Mappin & Webb. They were reunited when Mappin & Webb bought Mappin Brothers in 1902. The firm remained in the Mappin family until it was merged with Walker & Hall and Elkington & Co to form British Silverware in 1963.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents, no loss to the interior gilding and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 115 years of good service. The hinge on the lid is in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
As you would expect from Mappin & Webb, this is a well made item in a good gauge of silver. The card case measures 9.7cm / 3.8ins by 7.1cm / 2.8ins and is 0.8cm / 0.31ins deep. It weighs in at a substantial 97.2g / 3.43oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside rim of the case, are easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter II for 1908 and the distinctive Mn & Wb makers' mark for Mappin & Webb. The lid has a partial set of the lion passant and the date letter stamped on the outside front.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the card case.
