Edwardian Silver Cased Cigar Cutter, London, 1909
Here we have a large Edwardian Sterling Silver cased Cigar Cutter. The cutter has a steel v-cutter blade and central bar with a Sterling Silver surround. Edward VII was famous for his enjoyment of cigars both as King and previously as Prince of Wales and this was the height of popularity for cigar smoking in the UK.
The cigar cutter is made in London by Cohen & Charles and dates to 1909. Albert Cohen & Charles Solomon traded as Cohen & Charles from their premises in London's Holborn Circus from the late 1890s and the firm remained in business until the late 1960s. They specialised in accessories for the well off gentleman and particularly smoking related ones.
The cigar cutter has definitely seen some use and has signs of wear but the blade remains in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cutter is 15.2cm / 6ins long and 1.7cm / 0.6ins wide. It weighs in at 94.3g / 3.3oz, which is a combination of Sterling Silver and steel.
The hallmarks on the side of the cutter are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter o for 1909 and the C & C makers' mark for Cohen & Charles. The blade is stamped with a makers' mark for the steel company but we have been unable to identify this.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
