Edwardian Silver Matchbox Holder, B'ham, 1902
This is an unusual and distinctive Edwardian Sterling Silver Matchbox Holder. The holder has an embossed image of a stag amongst the hills on the top.
The matchbox holder was made in Birmingham by noted silversmiths Crisford & Norris and dates to 1902. Harold Crisford & William Norris established their business in 1896 at premises in Vyse Street in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. They are best known for their good quality and well designed small items for personal use, novelty baby rattles, pin cushions and stylish powder compacts. They remained in business up until around 1970.
The matchbox holder has definitely seen some use but the overall condition is good, with just a small dent in one side of the opening plus the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 120 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The holder measures 4.4cm / 1.7ins by 2.8cm / 1.1ins and is 1.6cm / 0.63ins high. It weighs in at 9.7g / 0.34oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside frame of the holder, are somewhat rubbed but can still be read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter c for 1902 and the C & N makers' mark for Crisford & Norris.
