Here we have a good quality George II Sterling Silver Table Spoon in the Hanoverian pattern. The spoon has a central rib down the front of the stem and the letter P elegantly engraved on the underside of the stem.

The spoon was made by Penetecost Symonds and assayed in Exeter in 1744. Based in Plymouth, Pentecost Symonds was active in the 1730s and 1740s, with his pieces being sent to Exeter to be hallmarked. His mark is primarily seen on spoons and flatware but he did also make some larger pieces.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, some rounding to the tip of the spoon and just the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after 280 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The table spoon is 20.2cm / 7.9ins long, 4.2cm / 1.6ins across the bowl and weighs in at 54.3g / 1.9oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The spoon is bottom struck, so there is inevitably some distortion of the hallmarks but they can still be read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head and three towered wall assay marks for Exeter, the date letter u for 1744 and the P S makers' mark for Pentecost Symonds.
