George V Silver Bowler's Teaspoon, R. Pringle 1913
This is a very nicely made George V Sterling Silver Teaspoon decorated with a image of a lawn bowler. Bowls as a sport or pastime in Britain goes back to at least the middle ages and probably earlier. The sport was formalised in the 1840s and 1850s and quickly became popular. It was a tradition in the early 20th century to give silver spoons as prizes in bowling competitions and these were usually decorated with a bowling image or figure. For this reason, bowler's spoons are often found as individual pieces rather than in sets of 6 as is more usual with teaspoons.
This teaspoon was made by Robert Pringle & Sons in Birmingham and dates to 1913. It is in a variant of the King's Pattern shape with the image of the bowler in the widest part at the top of the stem. It would be ideal for anyone who enjoys bowls today.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and only the superficial surface wear you would expect after 108 years. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The teaspoon is 11.9cm / 4.75" long and weighs a very respectable 15.5g / 0.54oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the underside of the bowl are clear and easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter "o" for 1913 and the RP makers' mark for Robert Pringle & Sons.
