This is an elegant George V Sterling Silver Cigarette Case from the 1930s. The case is basically square and deep enough to hold cigarettes on both sides. There is attractive acanthus leaf engraving on both front and back of the outside with a blank cartouche on the front. The back is curved to fit comfortably into a pocket and the case has a gold washed interior.

The cigarette case is made in Birmingham by Herbert Bushell & Son and dates to 1932. Founded around 1890, the firm became Herbert Bushell & Son around 1910 and continued in business up until the mid 1960s.

Condition is very good with just a slight flattening to one corner on the back and the regular superficial surface wear that has to be expected after 90 years of good service. The hinge and the catch are in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The cigarette case is almost square at 8.6cm / 3.4ins by 8.1cm / 3.2ins and is 1.4cm / 0.55ins deep. It weighs in at a very respectable 88.7g / 3.1oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the inside of the case, are crisp and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter H for 1932 and the H.B & S makers' mark for Herbert Bushell & Son. In addition, the other half of the case has the lion passant and the date letter H.
