George V Silver Cigarette Case, J. Gloster, 1923
This is a stylish George V Sterling Silver Cigarette Case. The cigarette case is octagonal with engine turned decoration to back and front. The interior is gilded and there is a metal strap to hold the cigarettes in place. The cartouche on the front has the initials C N elegantly engraved within it.
The cigarette case was made in Birmingham by silversmiths Joseph Gloster Ltd and dates to 1923. Joseph Gloster registered his first mark at the Birmingham assay office in 1888 and set up business at the Lion Silver Works. The firm produced a very wide range of silverware and were quickly successful, becoming Joseph Gloster Ltd in 1901. They remained in business up until around 1980.
Condition is good, with just the superficial surface wear and tear that has to be expected on an item that has spent 100 years in pockets or handbags. The hinges and clasp are in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cigarette case is 8.5cm / 3.3ins high by 5cm / 1.9ins wide and 1cm / 0.39ins deep. It weighs in at a very respectable 63.9g / 2.2oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside of the case, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter y for 1923 and the J.G Ltd makers' mark for Joseph Gloster Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail Tracked 24.
